LETTER TO DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH REQUESTING LOCKHEED'S HAZARDOUS MATERIALS MANAGEMENT PLAN

September 9, 2003

Mr. Steve Schneider
Santa Cruz County Office of Environmental Health
701 Ocean St. Rm. 231
Santa Cruz, CA 95060

Dear Mr. Schneider,

As long-time residents of the Central Coast, we are committed to
helping ensure that all who live, work, and recreate along our
beautiful coast make every effort to steward the natural environment
and take appropriate measures to protect against unforeseeable and
irretrievable environmental contamination. Recently, a group of Santa
Cruz and Bonny Doon residents formed Community Concerned About
Lockheed Martin (CCALM) to obtain information about our corporate
neighbor, Lockheed Martin, which occupies a large private site at the
end of Empire Grade. We have been able to find little information
about the plant's operations on our own and that is why we have turned
to your office for assistance.

We understand that owners of the Lockheed Martin facility have filed a
Hazardous Materials Management Plan (HMMP) with your office and we
would like an opportunity to review it at your earliest convenience.
It is our intent to become more informed about the hazardous and
radioactive materials present at the facility, and transported by the
company up and down our roads.  We would also like to know the types
of public risks associated with Lockheed Martin's plant operations and
the steps the company has taken to mitigate possible impacts to its
neighbors and the natural environment in the event of an accident.
This information will allow residents of the area to become better
prepared to quickly respond to protect themselves in the unlikely
event that a hazardous condition presents itself at the Bonny Doon
site or along its access roads.

Please let us know when and where the plan can be made available for
our review.

Thank you in advance for your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Community Concerned About Lockheed Martin (CCALM)
